Opiate Addiction

Opiates – narcotics derived from the opium plant – are among the most abused drugs in the world. Opiates are a class of drug that includes morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl, and other synthetic compounds easily available by prescription. Traditionally prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain, many users become addicted to the effects produced by opiates, such as euphoria, “nodding” (alternately drowsy and alert states of consciousness), and apathy towards troubling or upsetting events. Over time, users find they need increased amounts of the drug to produce the same effects and avoid withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal from prescription opiates mirrors that of heroin, with users suffering an array of symptoms, including anxiety and agitation, intense muscle pain, insomnia, nausea and vomiting. People abusing prescription opiates can have an especially difficult time seeking and accepting help, believing erroneously that since opiates are legal and prescribed by a medical doctor, they cannot have an addiction.
