Life is about balance and often, when people are struggling with dual diagnosis issues, it can be hard enough just to wake up, shower and get dressed. Our goal at Milestones is to restore that balance by incorporating healthy habits back into (or for the first time) into one’s life.
Getting the body moving is essential to improving both your physical and mental health and has been proven to reduce stress levels . At Milestones Ranch we have access to a beautiful state of the art gym.
Calamigos Guest Spa and Gym is a private fitness facility and spa located approximately 100 yards from Milestones. Milestones guests have access to the facility from 11:15am-12:15pm Monday through Friday and optional weekend gym time as well. We have implemented a required gym time for all residents from 11:15am to 12:15pm because we recognize that half the battle is just getting to the gym.
During this gym time clients have access to the Olympic size swimming pool, pickleball courts, top of the line treadmills, elliptical, Peloton bicycles, machine weights, free weights and much more.
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport and is easy to learn. This popular sport is not only fun, it has a lot of mental health benefits.
Pickleball improves your mood by warding off depression. Physical activity releases endorphins, mood-boosting neurochemicals that reduces stress, relieves pain, and boosts well-being.
It also is a social sport and helps build a community of other players. Making social connections as you play can improve mental health as well. This sport gives people a goal to work towards whether it’s winning a game, improving one’s skill, or just meeting people and making new connections.
Studies have shown playing pickleball has other benefits such improving blood flow to the brain; enhances cerebellum function; strengthens the hippocampus, reduces cognitive impairment and keeps the brain younger.
Milestones Ranch Malibu has pickleball courts for those who want to discover activities that promotes healthy well-being while having clean fun.
In addition to the gym time we also offer clients other various forms of aerobic activities so each client can uncover for themselves what types of activities they can do on their own when they get home. Some of these additional activities include, but are not limited to:
- 1-3x weekly professionally led hikes on our many nearby trails in the beautiful Santa Monica mountains or along the beach
- Indoor Rock Climbing
- Qi Gong
- Trauma informed yoga classes
- Kick boxing classes
- Aqua Aerobics
- Strength training
- Boot Camp Classes
Structure, routine and managing stress are an integral components in early recovery. Our goal is to help each client learn balance including healthy living habits while in treatment so they can take it with them after they leave and establish a healthy daily routine that works for them outside of treatment.
